FAQ ABOUT THE NEW DEA OPIOID TRAINING REQUIREMENT

Thomas A. Viola, R.Ph., CCPThe U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is requiring DEA-registered practitioners to complete 8 hours of training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.

The Ohio Dental Association will have several opportunities to help dentists meet this requirement.

“The ODA has put together a number of opportunities to assist member dentists in complying with the new DEA training requirement that will be available in the coming months,” said Dr. Evan Tetelman, chair of the ODA Dental Education and Licensure Committee.

This list of Frequently Asked Questions will provide answers to common questions the ODA has received about this new requirement and how to obtain the training.

Who is required to complete the DEA opioid training requirement?

All DEA-registered practitioners who renew their DEA registration on or after June 27, 2023 will be required to check a box affirming they have completed the new training requirement.

Will I have to complete this requirement each time I renew my registration?

This is a one-time training requirement and will not be part of future renewals, according to the DEA.

Do I have to complete all of the training at once?

The 8 hours of training can occur in multiple sessions that equal 8 hours of training and it can be in a classroom setting, seminar, professional society meeting or virtual.

Who can provide the training?

The training must be provided by one of these accredited groups:

  • A CERP-approved provider like the Ohio Dental Association.
  • The American Dental Association (ADA).
  • The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).
  • The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
  • The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP).
  • American Medical Association (AMA).
  • The American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or any organizations accredited by the AOA to provide continuing medical education.
  • The American Psychiatric Association (APA).
  • The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
  • The American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA).
  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Any other organization accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (AACCME) or the Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR), whether directly or through an organization accredited by a state medical society that is recognized by the ACCME or CCEPR.

Any other organization approved or accredited by the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, the ACCME, or the CCEPR.

Can past courses count to fulfil this requirement?

Yes, as long as the training was provided by one of the groups approved by the DEA and as long as you have documentation that you completed the course.

Dentists should keep a record of the 8 hours of opioid and substance use disorder training they complete for this requirement.

Can I obtain the required training through the Ohio Dental Association?

The ODA is accredited through CERP, and is therefore authorized to provide dentists with training that qualifies to meet the DEA’s opioid education requirement.

There will be several ways that dentists can meet the DEA’s opioid training requirement during the 2023 ODA Annual Session:

  • Amber Riley, MS, RDH, FAAFS, FIACME will present: “Mercy or Menace? The Chemistry, Use and Effect of Opiates and Alternatives for Pain Control” online. The course is free with paid registration to ODA Annual Session and will be available online from Sept. 25 through Dec. 31. When combined with 6 additional hours of education from courses with similar content, this course meets the DEA opioid training requirement. This course is designed for all members of the dental team and will also meet the Ohio State Dental Board (OSDB)’s requirement to obtain at least 2 hours of opioid prescribing CE by the end of this biennium for license renewal.
  • Thomas A. Viola, R.Ph., CCP will present “Self Medication: Dental Considerations and Patient Care Planning” on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This course, when combined with 5 additional hours of education from courses with similar content, meets the DEA opioid training requirement.
  • Thomas A. Viola, R.Ph., CCP will present “Street Drugs and Other Substances of Abuse: Patient Considerations” on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. This course, when combined with 5 additional hours of education from courses with similar content, meets the DEA opioid training requirement.
  • As a convenient option for dentists only, the ODA will present an 8-hour course before the official start of Annual Session on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Presented by Thomas A. Viola, R.Ph., CCP and ODA staff, the presentation will meet both the DEA opioid training requirement and the OSDB’s mandatory opioid CE requirement. Lunch will be provided.

Separately, the ODA recently released a 2 hour online opioid CE course, available free to members by clicking here. It can be combined with 6 additional hours of education from courses with similar content to meet the DEA opioid training requirement. This course will also meet the OSDB’s requirement to obtain at least 2 hours in opioid prescribing CE by the end of this biennium.
