ODA WEBPAGE PROVIDES RESOURCES TO HELP DENTISTS RECRUIT, RETAIN STAFF
Increasing the number of dental assistants and hygienists in the workforce is a top priority for the Ohio Dental Association. One of the workforce resources available to ODA members is a webpage about recruiting and retaining dental staff members. This webpage is part of the ODA’s efforts to address staffing shortages faced by dentists.
“Workforce challenges continue to impact dental practices across Ohio, so the ODA developed the Recruit and Retain Staff webpage to help members access meaningful staffing solutions in one convenient location,” said Dr. Leonardo Nassani, chair of the ODA Dental Education and Licensure Committee. “From hiring and retention guidance to wage statistics, workforce research and discounted job postings, the page helps dentists strengthen their teams and build practices where team members choose to stay.”
The webpage is available exclusively to ODA members and provides resources to help dentists recruit and retain staff.
Resources include:
- Information from the American Dental Association to help dentists recruit, hire and train a dental team.
- Information from the ADA on hiring staff, being a good boss, and adhering to regulations.
- An ADA Health Policy Institute report with data from dental team members to offer a comprehensive outlook on the levers available to sustain and improve workplace satisfaction among dental practice personnel.
- Links to Ohio occupational employment & wage statistics and Ohio occupational employment projections from the Ohio Bureau of Labor Market Information (LMI).
The page also includes information about posting a job listing on the ODA’s Jobs & Ads Board along with a list of articles featured in the “ODA Today” about workforce and staffing issues.
These efforts are the result of a 2022 ODA House of Delegates resolution to develop and implement a dental staff recruitment campaign to help member dentists meet their staffing needs and address the shortage numbers of hygienists, assistants, EFDAs and front office personnel.
The ODA Dental Education and Licensure Committee directs these initiatives, monitors workforce issues and develops strategies to encourage careers in dental fields.
This webpage is just one of several initiatives designed to improve dental workforce shortages. Other initiatives include a series of radio and social media ads to attract new dental assistants and hygienists into the workforce, meeting with all of Ohio’s dental hygiene program directors concerning expanding their capacity and class size, sending “return to work” messages to Ohio dental hygienists who have left the workforce, working with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) to present the first ever Dental Assisting Professional Development Day to dental assisting instructors from across Ohio and supporting the development and/or funding of new or expanded hygiene programs, among other initiatives.
