The American Dental Association has posted a webinar about “The Role of Aerosol on the Transmission of Coronavirus and the Impact in Dentistry.” The webinar features ODA member Dr. Purnima Kumar, who critically examines the evidence on microbial payload in dental aerosols, methods of reducing bioload at source, mitigating aerosol spread and decreasing microbial contamination.
The webinar also features Dr. Don Milton, who explains the role of aerosol in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, analyzes the potential measures to prevent virus transmission and answers questions related to virus load in the air and patient risk.

OSHA guidance for dental offices
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued an alert listing safety tips employers can follow to help protect dental industry workers from exposure to the coronavirus.

COVID-19 guidelines for dental offices
When utilizing the OSHA, CDC and the ADA guidance documents, dentists must use their professional judgement. All are guidance documents intended to assist dentists and employers in working through the issues associated with providing care to their patients in a safe working environment. Each entity may provide slightly differing guidance, and it is up to the dentist to determine how to proceed.
