DR. GRACE YUM TO SPEAK ABOUT WORK/LIFE BALANCE, POWER OF COMMUNITY AT ODA ANNUAL SESSION

Dr. Grace Yum

Dr. Grace Yum, founder of Mommy Dentists in Business, will be speaking at ODA Annual Session on Friday, Sept. 26.

Yum started Mommy Dentists in Business as a way for mothers in dentistry to connect so that colleagues could share their challenges and commonalities.

Yum said she was inspired to start Mommy Dentists in Business after attending a law conference with her husband, and she noticed that many lawyers worked at a large law firm where they could connect with peers, whereas dentists are often more isolated.

“I thought wow this is so great to have a community of likeminded individuals,” she said. “That motivated me to bring a community together.”

Mommy Dentists in Business started out as a Facebook group in 2017 and grew into a larger organization as people invited friends and it grew larger.

Yum will be presenting the course “Work Life Balance: Is It Really Possible?” from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26. In this course, Yum will explore tried and true strategies to create work-life balance while maintaining a thriving practice. Through mindset shifts, time management techniques, and delegation strategies, you’ll learn how to redefine success on your own terms.

“It’s really to create systems they can implement to decrease stress; how to find balance without feeling guilty,” she said. “I think people who have passion about their jobs tend to be workaholics, and it can overwhelm and overconsume them. It’s made for people who have a tendency to be a workaholic to come listen to why it is beneficial to create some balance, for health benefits and family benefits.”

While this course will be especially helpful for moms in dentistry, all dentists and team members will benefit from attending.

Yum will also be hosting “The Power of Community: Enhancing Health, Longevity and Happiness: A Lunch & Learn” from 12:15-1:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26. During this lunch and learn for dentists, Yum will explore the transformative impact of community on your mental well-being, longevity and overall happiness. Learn how fostering meaningful connections can significantly reduce stress, anxiety and feelings of isolation while improving your quality of life and overall health. Drawing from recent studies and Blue Zone research, you’ll learn practical strategies to create a supportive environment that enhances your personal and professional life.

Following her lunch and learn, Yum will host a meet and greet in The Den at the entrance to the Exhibit Hall from 2:30-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26.

“The benefit of coming to the ODA Annual Session is to find mentors, for mentors to help mentees and I think those relationships are very beneficial no matter what age, no matter what track you are, whether a hygienist, dental assistant, etc. A lot of times benefits such as mentee/mentor are found in this type of setting and I think that’s crucial,” Yum said. “I would encourage younger dentists to come to these meetings, that’s where they’ll find mentorship, not strictly online. It also trickles into finding a job, finding people to employ. This type of community is helpful in building your own business.”

Yum is a mother and a board-certified pediatric dentist. She is the founder and practice owner of Yummy Dental & Orthodontics for Kids. In addition to managing the Mommy Dentists in Business community, she also hosts her own podcast, Mommy Dentists in Business Podcast. Yum has appeared and was featured on TODAY Show on NBC nationally, NBC Chicago as a repeat guest, Parents Magazine, Parenting Magazine, and Chicago Parent Magazine. She has also appeared on over 50 podcasts, with topics covering dentistry, work/life balance and business tips for the working mom.
