CALLAHAN MEMORIAL AWARD: DR. WILLIAM GIANNOBILE

Dr. William Giannobile is the 2026 recipient of the Ohio Dental Association Callahan Memorial Award.

Dr. William Giannobile has dedicated his career to periodontal research, clinical practice and educating the next generation of dentists. In recognition of his efforts, he will receive the 2026 Ohio Dental Association Callahan Memorial Award on Friday, Sept. 18 at the Callahan Celebration of Excellence, held in conjunction with the 160th ODA Annual Session.

“If you look at the career and history of Dr. William Giannobile, you can easily see why the Callahan Commission chose him as this year’s Callahan Awardee,” said Dr. Joseph Mellion, chair of the Callahan Commission. “After receiving his dental degree, Dr. Giannobile received his master’s degree in oral biology, a certificate in periodontology, and postdoctoral training in molecular biology. In addition to being the current dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, he has continued NIH-funded research on oral and periodontal regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and precision medicine. He has received numerous awards throughout his career for all of his outstanding contributions to our profession.”

Giannobile said it’s a tremendous honor to receive the Callahan Memorial Award.

“Knowing the history of this international award and the distinguished individuals who have received it makes the recognition especially meaningful,” he said. “I view it not only as a personal honor, but also as recognition of the mentors, colleagues, students, research teams and institutions that have supported me throughout my career. I am deeply grateful to the Ohio Dental Association and the Callahan Memorial Award Commission (especially as someone who lived in Michigan for 22 years!).”

Giannobile said he was interested in science and medicine from an early age.

“I grew up on a small farm in the Ozarks of Missouri, and an inspiring high school chemistry teacher encouraged me to participate in international science and engineering fairs,” he said. “He helped give me the confidence to become a first-generation college student. I had a college biochemistry professor who encouraged me in research with my first dental research project of isolating glucosyl transferase from Streptococcus Mutans.”

While in college, Giannobile said he had the opportunity to work with a local dentist who also owned a farm.

“He became an important role model and showed me that dentistry could combine science, service, craftsmanship and a rewarding quality of life,” he said. “Once I entered dental school and became involved in research at the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR at the time) and at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, I realized that dentistry could also allow me to pursue discovery, education and patient care throughout my career. I was able to combine my love of science and teaching with the rewards of what one gains in patient care.”

Giannobile earned his DDS and a master’s degree in oral biology from the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 1991. He then went on to earn his certificate in periodontology and Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in oral biology from Harvard University in 1996. He also completed postdoctoral training in molecular biology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.

Early in his career, he served on the faculty at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and at the Forsyth Institute. In 1998, he joined the University of Michigan, where he said he had the opportunity to build a career spanning clinical practice, research, teaching and academic leadership. While there, he helped establish the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research, which focused on clinical and translational research, and served as its director. He served as chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine and held appointments in both dentistry and biomedical engineering at Michigan’s College of Engineering.

In 2020, he returned to Harvard and was appointed the 11th dean of the School of Dental Medicine.

“Throughout that journey, I have continued to practice periodontics and implant dentistry,” he said. “My career has not followed a conventional private-practice path; instead, I have tried to integrate patient care with research, education, mentorship and service to the profession.”

Giannobile’s research focuses on oral and periodontal regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and precision oral health.

“A central goal of our work is to find better ways to regenerate the bone and soft tissues lost through periodontal and peri-implant diseases or craniofacial injury,” he said. “We are also interested in translating laboratory discoveries into therapies that can be used predictably in clinical practice. That includes studying biomaterials, biologic agents, tissue-engineering approaches, genomics, artificial intelligence and other tools that can help us tailor prevention and treatment to the individual patient. I have been fortunate to lead a continuously NIH-funded research program for over 30 years and to collaborate with talented scientists, clinicians, trainees and engineers from many disciplines.”

Giannobile said his favorite part about being a dentist is the ability to improve people’s health and quality of life while developing meaningful, long-term relationships with patients.

“As a periodontist, it is particularly rewarding to preserve or restore the tissues that support the teeth and to help patients regain comfort, function and confidence,” he said. “As an academic who also provides clinical care, I greatly enjoy sharing my insights related to research and how new approaches to care can help a patient better understand their disease/condition and look to how the field is evolving that may not only help them now but also in the future. I also value the breadth of the profession. Periodontology allows me to care for patients, educate and mentor future professionals, and pursue research that may improve how care is delivered. Seeing scientific discoveries eventually benefit patients is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.”

He has produced over 300 manuscripts, textbook chapters, and patents focused on periodontology, regenerative medicine and oral health research. He is the editor or co-editor of over 10 books focused on clinical, translational research, periodontology and regenerative medicine. Giannobile served as the editor-in-chief for the “Journal of Dental Research” for 10 years and has served on the editorial board of several other journals. Giannobile has also served as a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for Dental Devices.

Giannobile is active in the American Dental Association; the American Academy of Periodontology; American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research; as well as other local societies such as the American Academy of Dental Science and the Harvard Odonotological Society. He has served as a president of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation and the Osteology Foundation, among many other positions with various organizations.

“Organized dentistry gives our profession a collective voice,” he said. “It allows dentists to advocate effectively for patients, strengthen standards of care, support education and research, and respond to changes affecting oral health and the delivery of care. It also creates communities in which dental professionals can learn from one another, mentor younger colleagues and work together on challenges that no individual practitioner or institution can address alone. My involvement with organizations such as the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation and the Osteology Foundation has shown me how professional organizations can advance science, support emerging leaders, and improve care on a global scale.”

Giannobile has received the American Dental Association’s Norton Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research, the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Academy of Periodontology, the ADA Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research, the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Distinguished Scientist Research in Periodontal Disease Award and the William J. Gies Award from the American Academy of Periodontology and American Dental Education Association, among others. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association for Dental Research and the International and American Colleges of Dentists.

Outside of dentistry, Giannobile enjoys spending time with his family and staying connected to the outdoors and his rural Missouri roots. He also likes to stay active through running and cycling.

“I would certainly like to acknowledge my family,” he said. “I was greatly inspired throughout life by my father and mother. They have been amazing role models to me. My lovely wife Angela of 36 years has been my strongest confidant in my life. My son Anthony who has recently joined the profession brings me great joy and support given our close relationship. Their love, patience and support have made every stage of my career possible.”

The Callahan Memorial Award Commission was established in 1920 by the ODA to honor the work of John Ross Callahan, one of Ohio’s noted dental researchers and a leader in organized dentistry. Since its establishment, the award has continued to grow in prominence in the dental profession. Past Callahan Memorial Awardees include such luminaries as George Paffenbarger, Wendell Postle, Lindsey Pankey, P.I. Branemark, Arthur Dugoni, Gordon Christensen, and Linda Niessen.

“I have been extraordinarily fortunate to learn from inspiring teachers and mentors and to work alongside talented colleagues, students, fellows and research teams. Any recognition I receive reflects their contributions as well,” Giannobile said. “My life’s purpose has been to inspire others to believe in themselves and become their best while helping propel new knowledge forward. I hope this award can also underscore the importance of mentorship, scientific discovery and collaboration in advancing dentistry and improving oral health for the patients and communities we serve.”
