A message from ODA President Dr. Sharon Parsons about PPE

As our focus starts to turn to how we can reopen our offices, I want to reassure you that the Ohio Dental Association places a high priority on the safety of you, your staff and your patients. At this time, the state’s order that prohibits non-essential procedures does not have an end date, but we want to make sure we are prepared to return to work when that time comes. We know that there are a lot of questions about what personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required and how dentists can obtain that equipment.
The ODA has been working behind the scenes on these issues. The ODA and the American Dental Association have had very extensive discussions about testing, PPE, dental procedures, dental office safety and other issues. These discussions have not been limited to within organized dentistry but have also involved scientific and governmental leaders at both the state and federal levels. We are closely following the scientific evidence related to PPE for dental offices and we have been in contact with the ADA, the Ohio State Dental Board, the Ohio Department of Health and other entities to stay up to date on these issues. The data and information about this is changing at a rapid pace, and we place a high priority on providing accurate information to our members. As soon as we have clear direction on what PPE will be recommended to maintain safety in your office, we will communicate that to you.
We also know there is a shortage of PPE. I want to thank everyone who donated their excess PPE to local hospitals or other facilities at the front lines of fighting the coronavirus. We know what a sacrifice this was. We have heard from many dentists, and I have experienced myself, that it is almost impossible to procure the PPE we need right now. The ODA is working with suppliers to do our best to make the necessary PPE available to our members. Last year, the ODA created a group purchasing organization (GPO) called OhioDDS to help our members get access to discounts on their dental supplies, equipment and service needs. We are working with our supplier, Midway Dental, to source personal protection equipment (PPE) at an affordable price. If you are not already a member of the GPO, you may join at no charge or obligation to order products from it by clicking here.
We have also heard from many members about various products that are being promoted to help protect dentists, their staff and their patients from the coronavirus. Please be sure to do your due diligence and research any products before you purchase them to ensure that the scientific data supports these products.
The ODA places a high priority on providing you with trusted information. Please continue to read our emails and visit www.oda.org for the most accurate, up to date information on PPE and the coronavirus. We will provide additional information about what PPE will be recommended and how you can purchase that PPE as soon as possible.
