ODA Foundation provides grants, scholarships to further dental education in Ohio

The Ohio Dental Association Foundation (ODAF), the philanthropic arm of the ODA, experienced a successful year in 2009.
Donations in 2009 surpassed $182,000 and came from dues donations, the annual raffle and donations made in honor or in memory of another or directed to one of the ODA Foundation's designated funds.
Of the designated fund donations, Peg Hinkle gave an additional $10,000 to the Bob & Peg Hinkle Family Fund, which was established in 2008 in memory of her late husband Dr. Bob Hinkle by his family. Hinkle was devoted to organized dentistry and to his family, and the fund perpetuates his commitment to helping others.
"Our donors have been so responsive to the goals and programs of their Foundation," said Dr. Ron Stanich, chair of the ODA Foundation Board of Trustees. "Awareness of the work we do continues to grow, and the continued support and generosity is deeply appreciated by those we help. Through the level of giving that strengthens each year, we will be able to fund more scholarships and grants. I encourage dentists to consider establishing their own legacy through estate planning and creating a designated fund."
Anyone wishing to make a donation directly to any fund through the ODA Foundation can do so by indicating their donation should be allocated to the specific fund. A listing of ODA Foundation funds can be found here.
Grant and scholarship applications
The Ohio Dental Association Foundation has opened the application process for scholarships and grants to dental and dental auxiliary students and programs having an impact on access to care in Ohio this year.
In 2009, the ODAF awarded $29,750 in scholarships and grants. Of that amount, $4,500 was awarded in grants, with the rest awarded in scholarships.
Support from ODA member dentists and other friends of the Foundation have enabled the Foundation to provide over $419,000 in grants and scholarships since 1995.
Since 1999, the ODA Foundation has awarded $191,500 alone in dental career scholarships in Ohio to attract the highest caliber of candidates to dentistry and help expand the pool of qualified dental auxiliaries for dental practices within Ohio.
Scholarship applications can be downloaded here. There are separate scholarship applications for each program: dentist, dental assistant, dental hygiene and expanded function dental assisting. Eligibility criteria include academic merit and financial need.
The ODA Foundation has awarded $227,520 in grants for oral health projects since 1995. They have impacted education for dental and dental auxiliary students, as well as community education programs.
New this year is an additional grant opportunity of up to $7,500 for a basic or clinical research program to be conducted by dental students at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry or Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, or dental residents in an American Dental Association-accredited Ohio general practice dentistry or pediatric dentistry residency program.
Specific criteria and examples of qualified projects are outlined in the 2010 Program Grant Application (click here). The deadline for this grant is June 30, 2010.
Completed applications and required documentation for grants and scholarships must be received by July 12, 2010. All scholarship and grant forms must be sent to the ODA Foundation, 1370 Dublin Road, Columbus, OH 43215.
The Foundation Board of Trustees will review and approve scholarships and grant requests; decisions will be made in late August.
Members are encouraged to tell student patients who pursuing dental education to consider applying for a scholarship. For more information on the application or grant process, call the ODA Foundation at (800) 282-1526.
ODA Foundation raffle
Another way members can support the ODA Foundation is to purchase raffle tickets for the Foundation's popular yearly fundraiser, which culminates during the 144th ODA Annual Session, held Sept. 23-26 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
The top prize for this year's raffle is a three-year, 15,000-mile/year lease on an Audi A4 sedan or a Volkswagen EOS hardtop convertible (winner's choice), the $20,000 cash equivalent or $20,000 toward the purchase of any car at Byers Auto in Central Ohio.
The second-place winner will receive a large-screen (minimum size of 52 inches), flat-panel LCD HDTV. Third prize is $1,000 cash.
Tickets are $100 each and are available in quantities of six for $500. Only 700 tickets will be sold. Proceeds from the fundraiser help the ODA Foundation fund grants and scholarships for students pursuing a dental education in Ohio.
Tickets purchased by Aug. 12, 2010, will be entered into a special "early bird" drawing for a single prize of $500 cash. The drawing will be held at the ODA on Aug. 20. The winner of the $500 cash prize is also eligible for the three raffle prizes.
The drawing will be held in the Exhibit Hall during the ODA Annual Session on Saturday, Sept. 25. Ticket holders need not be present to win.
Tickets can be purchased through any ODA Foundation trustee or member of the ODA Executive Committee or by calling Denise Benedetti, ODA Foundation assistant, at the ODA at (800) 282-1526. Tickets will also be available at the 2010 ODA Annual Session.
