The ODA responds to recent Medicaid restoration announcement
David Owsiany, Executive Director, Ohio Dental Association today issued the following statement in response to Governor Strickland's announcement that the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will continue to restore Medicaid dental services for adults as set forth in Am. Sub. H.B. 119, despite numerous cutbacks to other state programs:
"It is our understanding that the restoration of a fully funded adult dental Medicaid program is planned for later this year.
"We know that Ohio's current fiscal situation has forced Governor Strickland into having to make difficult decisions related to the state budget. We are grateful, however, for his continued commitment to restoring the dental Medicaid program.
"By indicating his intention to continue with the planned restoration, the Governor wisely realizes that the Medicaid adult dental program is an efficient, effective use of state dollars, as oral health is critical to overall health. Restoring funding for these services is a fiscally sound move for the state in the face of difficult financial times.
"By providing coverage for dental services, Medicaid will ensure Ohio's most vulnerable citizens are being treated in the most cost-effective setting – the dental office – instead of costlier settings like hospital emergency rooms.
"In addition, this program will go a long way toward meeting what the Ohio Department of Health has reported as the number one unmet health care need in the state – oral health."
