The Callahan Memorial Award Commission serves to perpetuate the history of the dental profession by recognizing excellence in the field of dentistry in the name of one of dentistry’s giants, Ohio’s own, Dr. John Ross Callahan. It does so by:
- Recognizing Excellence in the Profession. The Callahan Memorial Award Commission provides its international award annually to a person who has provided profound and impacting contributions to the art and science of dentistry and/or whose hard work, dedication and genius have improved the level of the oral health of the public.
- Recognizing Scholastic Excellence. The Callahan Memorial Award Commission provides student scholarships annually to the highest- ranking graduating dental student in each Ohio dental school.
The Callahan Memorial Award
Since 1920 The Callahan Memorial Award has been presented to a person who embodies the spirit of the Commission. One of dentistry’s few international awards, the honor now includes a $5,000 honorarium funded by the ODA House of Delegates with initial support from the Delta Dental Foundation affiliated with Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, and Sunstar Americas.
The Callahan Memorial Award Commission selects the Award honoree. Nominations are solicited by the Commission and can be submitted to the Commission. Past honorees are also solicited for recommendations. Once accepted, nominations are actively considered for a period of five years. An accepted nomination is considered an honor by the Commission and the nominee is notified by the Commission. Not all submitted nominations will be accepted by the Commission, but the Commission will consider all names that are presented.
To submit a nominee for consideration, please send a letter of recommendation, current CV and bio to: The Callahan Memorial Award Commission; c/o The Ohio Dental Association; 1370 Dublin Road; Columbus, Ohio 43215; or electronically to Suzanne Payne, ODA Director of Meetings & Conventions at suzy@oda.org.
