An awareness of the medical history and the various medications commonly prescribed for patients to self-administer will assist clinicians in anticipating the most commonly encountered medical diagnoses and provide valuable information that will help to identify high-risk patients who may experience a life-threatening medical emergency. Participants in this course will be able to recognize signs and symptoms, formulate a diagnosis and initiate immediate action to stabilize the patient. Where can you invest, and how can you grow wealth without stress? This seminar will show you how to create retirement strategies that work in any market. Find out how to invest, protect your assets, pass on your financial values to your heirs and create an integrated, synergistic plan that powerfully combines every aspect of your finances, including your investments, retirement plan, insurance, estate plan and taxes.

CE Hours: 3*
Fee: M - $90, NMD - $190, S/O - $71

What comes IN is not only important – it is the pulse of a company. A consultant or financial advisor looks at the amount of inventory purchased and used as a key to unlocking the financial status of a dental practice. If you have hundreds of dollars of inventory sitting on the shelf but are not using it, then your dental office has money that could be used to market and attract new patients. If your dental supplies are poorly organized, you may not be able to find an item you need. This can cause reduced efficiency in your daily schedule. Imagine a world where you always have the supplies you need, can find any item with a moment's notice and know exactly how many items you need to order by just looking at a computer screen! This course will help you design an inventory spreadsheet that will change your practice. Your new inventory spreadsheet can do so many things for you. It can quickly tell you how many items you need to order, print out an inventory list, track purchases (controlling assets) and help a temporary assistant or employee locate a product quickly (increasing efficiency!). The more information you put into the spreadsheet, the more you will get out of it!

*This course does not meet the mandatory Continuing Dental Education (CDE) requirements for licensure as mandated by the Ohio State Dental Board.

Partnership with the Ohio Academy of Orthodontists

Orthodontists, periodontists, surgeons and restorative dentists often have predetermined goals regarding the esthetic relationship of teeth. But these goals may differ from the esthetic goals of the patient. A recent study, completed at the University of Washington, shows that laypersons may not notice certain problems dentists and orthodontists strongly believe should be resolved. Therefore, problems such as midline discrepancy, unequal crown length, gummy smile, altered incisal inclination and black triangles may not need correction. Is there a threshold level where these discrepancies are not noticed and should remain untreated? If these problems are to be treated, what are the roles of the orthodontist, periodontist, and restorative dentist? This presentation will use many clinical examples as well as evidence-based research to answer these important questions.

Note: Ohio Academy of Orthodontists (OAO) members should register for Course Code O70.

The restorative options for replacing congenitally missing lateral incisors have changed significantly in recent years. No longer will restorative dentists consider conventional fixed bridges for young patients. Resin-bonded ( Maryland) bridges were popular initially, but long-term studies have shown these bridges have a high failure rate. Since implants were introduced into the United States in the early 1980s, they have become a popular alternative to replace congenitally missing maxillary laterals. But these types of restorations are extremely techniques sensitive. The orthodontist, restorative dentist and surgeon must work harmoniously in order to ensure an optimal esthetic result. The keys to esthetic success relate to the amount of space, the size and shape of the edentulous ridge, maintenance of adequate papillae and creating a stable gingival margin relationship. All these esthetic keys are developed and adjustable during orthodontic treatment. This presentation will describe how each of these esthetic components affects the outcome of maxillary lateral incisor implant restorations.

In addition, a step-by-step approach is presented that doctors can use to fast track their transition time line and maximize the benefits with astounding results. Today’s clinicians treat more medically and pharmacologically compromised patients than ever before. The availability of more than a thousand active ingredients in several thousand different formulations, and with over 100,000 nonprescription medications, with hundreds of facts about each of them, presents a seemingly insurmountable challenge in mastering the essentials for the clinical decision making process. Fortunately, the clinician who understands general pharmacological principles can learn to predict the behavior of each drug based on a few facts. It is better to develop a drug profile than it is to memorize isolated data. The best way to achieve this objective is to associate, envision, predict and inquire. Participants in this course will be introduced to representative cardiovascular drug profiles based on the top 200 drugs dispensed by U.S. community pharmacies. An awareness of the various commonly prescribed drugs will assist clinicians in identifying patients with commonly encountered cardiovascular problems. The intent is to provide participants with evidence-based knowledge essential for risk stratification of patients taking cardiovascular drugs and the development of appropriate diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic strategies commensurate with a patient’s ability to undergo and respond to dental care.
